Life in the Left Lane
Ahhhh…St. Croix: the only place where we drive on the left in cars made for driving on the right! We do tings our own way, mon. St. Croix has more diversity in our 80 square miles than most places one hundred times our size have! We are proud of our melting-pot heritage and celebrate it as often as possible. Take time to savor life on St. Croix, where the pace slows down and community takes the front seat.
Life in the Left Lane – everything looks better from here!
Our products capture the essence of St. Croix…….
Kenny Lindquist, owner of Cruzan Creations, arrived on St. Croix in 1959 and has spent most of his life living here. His mother worked for the government and was responsible for setting up what is now known as the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs. Whenever anything would go wrong, she would always comment; "Well, that's life in the left lane," referring to the fact that the island's traffic flow was driving on the left instead of on the right. Even today, the US Virgin Islands still observe that European influence of driving on the left with the steering wheel on the left. Newcomers to the islands often have a difficult time getting used to this change in pattern.
When the family decided to go into the T-Shirt printing business in the early 1980's, Kenny's mother suggested the name of Cruzan Creations. St. Croix residents are known as Crucians, but the word was often spelled "Cruzan". Probably the best known Crucian made product using the Cruzan spelling is Cruzan Rum, a product that has won many top awards in the rum industry.
Kenny quickly decided that he needed to create a unique T-Shirt design for his new business that would set him apart from the other T-shirt vendors on island. In 1986, he registered his mother's saying as a trademark with the Virgin Islands government and the "Life in the Left Lane" product was born. Twenty years later the screen-printed design has now been transferred to an embroidered T-Shirt with twelve different designs incorporating the "Life in the Left Lane" theme. Some use the local jargon of "in deh left lane" instead of "in the left lane", as well as other West Indian phrases. Kenny has also added other products to the line to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of "Life in the Left Lane". You can now get coffee mugs, bottle coozies, collapsible umbrellas, bumper stickers, and refrigerator magnet calendars. Ardith, Kenny's wife, will also be adding her Cruzan Rum Cakes. They are in the process of finalizing the packaging for this product. Coming soon will be Sweat Shirts, long sleeved T-Shirts, hats, "beach chairs-in-a-bag", and other products. Watch this site for the coming new additions.
As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration, Kenny has also joined forces with the St. Croix Business Guild in their effort to promote St. Croix. He is donating 15% of the sale of every "Life in the Left Lane" product to a special "Marketing Travel Fund" of the St. Croix Business Guild. This fund will help cover the expenses for sending a Guild member to various Travel Trade Shows. Purchase some of these great "Life in the Left Lane" products for gifts and help promote St. Croix at the same time.
The "Life in the Left Lane" products can be purchased at the Cruzan Creations Gallows Bay location, through the display location in the Pan Am Pavilion in Christiansted, or right here on the "Life in the Left Lane" website.
